ADVOCACY ON MOBILITY SNAPSHOTS CAMPAIGN WORKSHOP – 29th October 2024.
Passengers, Pedestrians and Cyclists Association of Zambia (PAPECA), was among the key stakeholders, that participated in a productive Mobility Snapshots Campaign workshop which was held by ZRST at ZRST offices, funded by Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety. This campaign focused on addressing critical safety issues at Lusaka’s Independence Avenue and Dedan Kimathi intersection.
Theme: Changing the Way We See Our Streets
The workshop highlighted major concerns, including:
1) High Vehicle and Pedestrian Traffic sharing unsafe road space
2) Lack of Designated Crossing Areas for pedestrians
3) Unsafe Speeds due to the absence of a 30 km/h limit
4) Blocked Footpaths restricting safe pedestrian movement 5) Motor vehicles and pedestrians share unsafe, mixed-use road space, increasing pedestrian risk (see photos included in the post).
Campaign Objectives:
1) Identify Dangers on the Roads to prioritize intervention points
2) Empower Communities to understand their right to safe mobility
3) Influence Decision Makers to take urgent steps to safeguard pedestrians
Our presentation underscored the urgent need to address these risks, not only at this intersection but also at similar hotspots throughout Lusaka. The data shared emphasized the importance of implementing pedestrian-friendly infrastructure to protect all road users and enhance overall safety.
In addition to discussing these concerns, we highlighted the proven benefits of road safety interventions, including improved health, climate outcomes, and social equity. An infographic illustrated the positive impact of reduced speed zones and safe pedestrian crossings, showing how these measures can contribute to safer and more livable streets.
In response, stakeholders made strong pledges to Commit to Act , demonstrating their commitment to improving the Independence Avenue and Dedan Kimathi intersection and prioritizing safe mobility across Lusaka. This is a vital step toward creating safer streets for all road users.
The workshop was insightful and interactive, with stakeholders, including governmental institutions namely: Office of the Town Clerk, Lusaka City Council , Ask RTSA, Zambia Police Service, Zambia Agency for Persons with Disability (Quasi-Governement), and Non Governmental Organizations, namely: @Public Passengers Drivers Association, UNDP Zambia, road_safety_ambassadors, Safety for People on the Move, Passengers Transport Corporative, Public and Commuters’ Rights Association of Zambia Passengers, Passengers, Pedestrians and Cyclists Association.-PAPECA””.
Together, we made resolutions to strengthen efforts toward safe, accessible streets for all road users across Lusaka.
Join us in advocating for safer streets!
