Press Statement from the Passengers, Pedestrians, and Cyclist Association (PAPECA)
October 31, 2024
The Passengers, Pedestrians, and Cyclist Association (PAPECA) is deeply saddened and disturbed by the tragic road traffic accident that claimed the lives of three young women and injured numerous others on Mosi Road in Ibex area, Lusaka, earlier today. This heart-wrenching incident, which took place at approximately 10:00 hours, involved a Toyota Hiace minibus that veered off the road and overturned due to excessive speed, leading to avoidable fatalities and injuries.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of Ruth Museteka, a promising student at Woodlands Nursing School, and the other two unidentified female victims. We also offer our sympathies to all those who were injured, and we hope for their swift recovery. The devastation caused by this incident is a stark reminder of the preventable consequences of reckless driving.
PAPECA condemns the apparent disregard for safety that led to this tragedy. Excessive speed, negligence, and the fleeing of the driver from the scene are intolerable actions that endanger the lives of all road users. We urge the Zambia Police to expedite their investigation and bring the responsible driver to justice.
Furthermore, this incident underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations, particularly concerning public transportation. Drivers transporting passengers must be held to the highest standards of accountability to prevent such tragedies.
PAPECA remains committed to advocating for enhanced road safety measures, including the implementation of rigorous speed controls, routine vehicle maintenance checks, and improved driver training programs. We call on all stakeholders, including the government, law enforcement agencies, and the public, to work collaboratively in fostering a safer transportation system that prioritizes the lives of all Zambians.
Let us act together to prevent such tragedies in the future and to honor the memory of those we have lost by committing to responsible and safe road practices.
